The robotics ECA uses the Parallax systems ActivityBot, a fully functional robot with an 8-core micro processor in a C++ programming environment. In this activity, the robot is roaming independently and avoiding obstacles by sensing them with ultrasonic sensors. When the sensor detects an obstruction, the robot stops, turns and moves again. Students in the ECA build circuits on the robot, and learn ways that robots navigate and gather data. Future projects may include additional surface robots and possible autonomous remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that function underwater.
